L. A. Dahlmer
b. 1946
Painter of Gloucester
L. A. “Larry” Dahlmer has lived in Gloucester his entire
life, and on the East Gloucester waterfront for most of the
last 40 years. The son of a Gloucester fisherman, he is the
grandson of a northern Michigan gill-netter who, with several
other families, moved east with their boats from the Great
Lakes about a century ago.
Idiosyncratic, and a follower of his own vision and
singular way of life, he has made his living mainly as a
self-taught wooden boat builder. He began painting seriously
about 8 years ago.
It has been a privilege and a pleasure to encourage his
unique talent. These paintings, painted from subjects dear to the artist
and his heritage, are, I believe, among the most original and
extraordinary being done today on Cape Ann.
All paintings are oil on masonite.
